Description:
MEXICAN-AMERICAN WAR Antique R. JOHNSON U.S. M1836 .54 FLINTLOCK Pistol

STANDARD ISSUE Used Into the AMERICAN CIVIL WAR

Here we present an antique Robert Johnson Model 1836 Flintlock Pistol dated 1837 in Middletown, Connecticut. This .54 caliber, smoothbore, flintlock pistol is one of approximately 18,000 Model 1836 pistols manufactured by Robert Johnson of Middletown, Connecticut. The Model 1836 was widely considered to be the best designed and manufactured flintlock pistol. The pistol has an 8 1/2 inch round barrel with a brass front sight blade, swivel ramrod with button head and iron mountings.

The barrel, ramrod, butt cap, barrel band and trigger guard are a bright finish. The lock plate, hammer, and tang were once casehardened. The lock is marked “U.S. / R. JOHNSON / MIDDN.CONN. / 1837” below the brass pan. Inspection and proof marks are visible atop the barrel, along with two clear cartouches on the left stock flat. The Model 1836 Flintlock Pistol was the standard issue handgun of the Mexican War and continued to be used well into the American Civil War.

The overall condition is good. Strong action. The bore is in good shape for its age and remains smooth. The stock/grip are solid and have been re-oiled. Thin cracks are present at the tip of the forend and around the band. Legible markings. Gray patina. “1837” dated. Two cartouches are mostly legible on the left flat.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 8-1/2 inches.

Caliber: .54 Flintlock
