This is a remarkable early pre-war Browning Model A-5 Shotgun in 12 gauge, manufactured by Fabrique Nationale (FN) in Herstal, Belgium, for Browning Arms. The serial number 171173 places production around 1937, as Browning A-5 serial numbers in the 170,000 range align with the mid-to-late 1930s, before World War II production changes. Designed by John M. Browning and introduced in 1902, the A-5 was the first successful semi-automatic shotgun, revolutionizing firearms with its recoil-operated, humpback design. Known as the “Auto-5,” it became a favorite among hunters and sportsmen for its reliability and versatility, used for waterfowl, upland game, and sport shooting. This example, shipped from the Browning Brothers’ shop in Ogden, Utah, includes a rare original patterning test target, adding significant historical value. Its historical significance lies in its direct connection to John Browning, one of America’s greatest firearms inventors, and its role as a pioneering semi-automatic shotgun that influenced modern designs.

This A-5 is in excellent condition, showing little use with only a few stock rubs from storage and a small area of worm damage to the horn butt plate, adding character to its originality. The 30" barrel, choked Full, retains most of its original blue finish, and the bore is bright, reflecting careful maintenance. The walnut stock, with a 14 1/2" LOP, is in superb condition aside from minor storage marks. The original Browning shipping box, though deteriorated and tape-repaired, along with the instruction manual and pristine Ogden, Utah patterning test target, make this a true time capsule from the Browning Brothers’ era. Mechanically fine, this shotgun is ready for display or cautious use with appropriate loads.

Don’t miss your chance to own this unique pre-war Browning A-5, a true collector’s treasure from John Browning’s own shop. Click the “Buy It Now” button or call 478-337-1000 to secure this fine shotgun today!
