Both the U.S. Army Air Corp and the U.S. Navy bought Savage Model 720 shotguns in long barrel and short barrel riot gun versions. The long 26 inch barrel guns like this one were sent to training bases/schools to be used in training both pilots and gunners to hit moving targets with a "lead". A small number of the long barreled version were also used for base security guard duty guns. Some 17,500 WW II U.S. Military issued Savage Model 720s were produced in 1943 - 1944. This Savage 720 has full US military markings, the receiver is stamped on the left side with a "P"over U.S. Ordnance flaming bomb, and "U.S.", the barrel is also stamped with a "P" over US Ordnance flaming bomb. The barrel also bears, in addition to standard Savage manufacturer's marks, four **** marks at the breech indicating it is full choked.
