This Auguste Francotte deluxe 16-gauge side-by-side embodies the quality and refinement for which the Liège maker is renowned. Built on a boxlock action with Greener cross-bolt, barrel side-clips, double triggers, ejectors, and a non-auto safety, it combines strength and reliability with the elegance expected of a high-grade continental gun. The 27" barrels are chambered for 2.75" shells and are both choked Modified (.010"/.012"), giving it versatile patterns for field use. Weighing just 5 lbs 14 oz, it carries beautifully in the field and mounts effortlessly.
The gun remains in very good as-found condition. The bores are mostly clear with only faint frosting after the chambers, the action locks up tight and operates smoothly, the triggers are crisp, and the ejectors are strong and properly timed. The action retains 80% of its original case color and is covered almost entirely in fine scroll engraving, with Francotte’s characteristic precision. The blued barrels retain about 98% of their original finish, showing only the lightest evidence of use.
The stock is fashioned from walnut in a round-knob pistol grip configuration with a splinter forend, both sharply checkered. The original Francotte checkered buttplate with smooth border remains in place. Handling marks are consistent with age and honest use, but overall wood-to-metal fit and finish remain excellent.
This is a truly deluxe little 16-gauge from one of Belgium’s most respected gunmakers—light, elegant, and mechanically strong. A wonderful upland bird gun with collectible appeal.
