Description:
Near Mint Low SN Rare DWM Model 1906 M2 Portuguese Army Luger
Offered here for sale and just acquired from a very prestigious collection is this SUPERB Portuguese “M2” Model 1906 .30 Cal. DWM Luger pistol.  The specimen was manufactured by the famed  firm of DWM ( Deutsche Waffen- und Munitionsfabriken (DWM) in Imperial Germany. DWM produced the famed Luger pistol, originally developed by Georg Luger.
This specimen is a low serial numbered pistol among a contract of approximately only 5,000 Model 1906 “M2” Lugers and were produced between 1908 and 1910 under a contract for the Royal Portuguese Army, during the brief reign of King Manuel II. These pistols feature the “Crown over M2” marking, a tribute to King Manuel II, along with Portuguese proofs.
King Manuel II's reign ended with the revolution of 1910, which led to Portugal becoming a republic. As a result, these “M2”-marked Lugers are limited in both production and historical era. After the revolution, later Portuguese Lugers omitted the “M2” crest, increasing the collectible appeal of those from the monarchy era. Finding one in superb condition, with 100% original blue and straw finish and possibly unfired, is exceedingly rare. Most examples exhibit wear or arsenal refurbishment.
This specimen, serial number 236 is extremely early—likely among the first production run—enhancing its rarity and provenance. All major components bear matching serial numbers and only the magazine has a matching number – so typical with luger examples but is a proper period magazine with wooden thumbpiece.  These pistols are chambered in 7.65?mm Parabellum (.30 Luger), incorporate a grip safety, no shoulder stock lug, and retain the classic 4¾″ barrel and bien-tuned German toggle system. An example with serial 699 retained about 40% original blue finish, demonstrating how rare pristine condition is. Many “M2” models appeared in s and collector listings, with typical finishes ranging from ~75% to ~90%. One would be hard pressed to find a specimen as fine and/or superior to this one. Given its extremely low serial number and superb preservation, this pistol is almost certainly one of the earliest “M2” Portuguese Lugers produced . Such early guns are exceptionally rare and prized among collectors.
