Has 24" barrel, NSN, dated 1847. Browned finish with color casehardened lock and breech lever with walnut stock. Breech of barrel marked "W. JENKS/U.S.N./RP/P/1847/ CAST STEEL". Lockplate marked "REMINGTON'S/HURKIMER/NY". Military cartouche on left side of stock, sub-inspector markings on buttplate, rear top of frame, trigger guard, trigger guard base, and primer mechanism. Jenks got a navy contract to make 1000 of these very interesting breach loading, side mounted mule ear lock carbines. You open the breech by pulling up on a toggle. Another interesting feature of this piece is that it employs Maynard tape primers. This was a system designed by Dr. Edward Maynard, a dentist with an interest in firearms. The percussion material was glued to paper making a roll of caps. These Maynard caps are still recognizable today as the same paper cap rolls they sell to use with modern cap guns with very minor changes. Dimensions: 41" long overall. Condition:Overall excellent to UNISSUED condition. Action functions mechanically. Vast majority of finish remains, stock has nice grain, a few small scratches, brass mountings with soft mustard patina, excellent bore.
