Description:
1904 Early Production U.S. SPRINGFIELD M1903 .30-06 Bolt Action C&R Rifle

World War I MILITARY/INFANTRY RIFLE w/LEATHER SLING

Here we present a C&R U.S. Springfield Model 1903 Bolt Action Infantry Rifle, made circa 1904 at the Springfield Arsenal. The M1903 Springfield, produced over 3 million units from 1903 to 1949, is an American bolt-action rifle with a five-round magazine. Adopted in 1903, it served in World War I and remained in service through World War II, mainly due to shortages of the M1 Garand. It was officially replaced as the standard infantry rifle by the semi-automatic M1 in 1936 but continued as a sniper rifle until 1975, seeing service in WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. Today, it remains popular among civilians for collection, competition, and military drills.

Initially, the 1903 Springfield was chambered in a new .30-03 caliber. The cartridge employed a rimless, necked-down case with a 220-grain round-nosed bullet that left the muzzle of the 24-inch barrel at some 2,300 feet-per-second. Though the round was certainly adequate for military work, when the Germans adopted a superior pointed spitzer bullet in 1904, the Americans followed suit with their own version that had a 150-grain cupro-nickel-jacketed bullet that boosted the older round's velocity by some 400 fps. And thus, the famed .30-06 was born.

The overall condition is good. Parkerized finishes. The stock shows expected wear. The bore is bright and shiny with a frosted appearance at the muzzle. Strong action. Legible markings. This example is arsenal refinished. “SA / Flaming Bomb / 9-15” marked barrel. Good leather sling.
