Forehand Arms Company, based in Worcester, Massachusetts, was known for producing reliable and affordable firearms for the working sportsman. Founded by Sullivan Forehand after the dissolution of Forehand & Wadsworth, the company continued the tradition of durable, no-nonsense firearms until it was acquired by Hopkins & Allen in 1902. This single-shot takedown shotgun was designed for utility and ease of use—a common feature for hunters and rural shooters of the era. The top-break action, external hammer, and robust construction made it a popular choice for upland game and small farm use. Firearm Description: This particular example features a 30-inch blued barrel chambered in 12 Gauge, made from fine decarbonized steel, as marked. The barrel retains moderate finish wear from field use, with scattered handling marks and some hunting scars consistent with its age. The bore is a shiny grey with light pitting, indicating past use. The top-break, single-shot action is mechanically solid, with a tang-mounted barrel release lever and an external hammer featuring a checkered spur for confident thumb engagement. Lock-up is firm, ejector, with no notable mechanical issues. The stock and forearm are made of hardwood with a smooth finish. The half grip stock and splinter forearm show noticeable finish wear and moderate handling marks. The wrist of the buttstock has several repaired cracks, including a chip behind the receiver, two visible cracks behind the upper tang and a 5-inch crack that extends from the lower tang through the grip have not been stabilized. Despite these imperfections, the stock remains structurally intact. At the rear, you'll find a high-relief squirrel in a black rubber buttplate, which adds a touch of period styling—however, the bottom section is broken off below the lower screw. Specifications:
Condition Notes: This Forehand Arms shotgun is a solid representative of its era, showing honest wear from over a century of potential field use. While the stock has undergone repair and the rubber buttplate is damaged, the action remains strong, and the shotgun is a worthy candidate for restoration, display, or use as a vintage shooter (pending inspection by a qualified gunsmith). Collector’s Note: Firearms from the Forehand Arms Company are increasingly sought after by collectors of American antique shotguns. Their rugged construction and connection to 19th-century American history make them a valuable addition to any vintage arms collection. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Add 3% for Credit Card Shipping will be actual cost plus insurance +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ This shotgun will be a GREAT addition to your future outings!
