Description:

Fratelli (Brothers) Bertuzzi, Gardone, VT, Italy Chuck Yaeger Commemorative 12 Gauge O/U shotgun commisioned in 1989 by the U.S. Historical Society. This gun #35 / 100. I know that at least 52 were produced but I doubt that 100 were produced. This gun commemorates the storied life of Brigadier General Charles Elwood "Chuck" Yaeger, America's foremost aviator. Born in West Virginia in 1923, he enlisted in the Army Air Force in 1941 and served as an aircraft mechanic before entering Enlisted Pilot Training. He became a WWII ace credited with shooting down 11.5 enemy aircraft (one with assist by another pilot). Most of his victories in a P-51 Mustang. On October 12, 1944 he achieved "ace in a day" status by downing 5 enemy aircraft in one mission. Following the war he became a test pilot including the testing of experimental rocket-powered aircraft. He became the first man to break the sound barrier in 1947 in the experimental Bell X-1 at Mach 1.05 at 45,000 feet. He set several other speed and altitude records. In 1962 he became commendant of the USAF Test Pilot School (Top Gun) which trained pilots and astronauts for NASA and the Air Force. He was active in both the Korean War and Viet Nam where he commanded fighter squadrons and wings. He was promoted to Brigadier General in 1969 and inducted into the National Aviation Hall of Fame in 1973. He passed in 2020 at age 97. A true American Hero in every sense.
This gun features 28" vent rib ejector barrels with a 6.5 mm vent rib with brass front bead. Bores are as new with 5 removeable chokes, Cyl/IC/M/IM/F.  Makers name in gold on the left side of top barrel. The sideplated boxlock receiver is French Silver with extensive engraving and gold inlays by Giovanni Steduto of the famous Creative Art engraving studio. On the left is a gold inlayed portrait of General Yaeger with a B-29 bomber in the background and a gold inlay of the Bell X-1 and 14 Oct. 1947. On the right is the center portion of the U.S. Air Force Shield surrounded by 13 gold stars and a gold inlayed P-51 Mustang. The floorplate bears gold inlayed double eagles. The detail of the gold inlays is amazing and can not be adequately photgraphed. Receiver borders, top lever, and trigger guard feature deep relief acanthus leaf scroll work with the serial number in gold on the trigger guard. Single selective trigger. Stocked in an extremely nice piece of Turkish Walnut with deeply contrasting mineral streaks. Very fine point pattern checkering.  LOP is 14 1/2"  DAC- 1 1/4"  DAH- 2 1/2"  Cast off 1/4"  Weight- 7lb 13oz  Cased in a quality Nizzoli leather trunk case with key, choke wrench, and chokes. Case with some external scuffing. This firearm remains in nearly new condition with only a small area of blue loss on the top barrel just ahead of the forearm as pictured. Just a fabulous piece that sold in 1989 for $12,500 which equals $30,393 in 2025 dolllars. Excellent value.
The Bertuzzi brothers, Elio & Remigio, were fourth generation gunmakers and considered among Italy's top tier gunmakers alongside Fabbri, Bosis, Abbiatico & Salvinelli, & Piotti. They retired in 2009. At that time their gull wing SxS shotguns had a base price of $135,000 without engraving. They typically produced only 40-50 bespoke guns per year.
