This is an early production musket with top-mounted bayonet stud, and exhibits an overall dark brown patina throughout the metal, with thin surface oxidation and pitting. Regardless, the armory marking is still clearly legible on the lockplate: "Charleville." Some mild surface rust is present throughout as well, heaviest on the buttplate, trigger guard , and sideplate. The stock has numerous small handling marks and blemishes scattered throughout the sanded and revarnished wood, with a chip missing from the rear edge of the lock inletting, and moderate wear around the edges of the lockplate. The original metal ramrod is no longer present ans a wooden replacement is installed instead. The lock is fully functional and locks firmly at half-cock, although the full-cock catch is slightly soft. This is a fair-good Revolutionary War era French musket overall, and would make a nice decorative accent for a gun room or study. Antique; Price: $4,195.00 |
