Description:
General Specs: L.C. Smith, 1938, 16 Gauge, 6lbs. 9oz., Chokes LM/IM, LOP 14 1/8", DAH 2 1/2", DAC 1 9/16"
Serial Number:  FWE163937

Between the years 1912 to 1945 Hunter Arms Company manufactured 4460 16-gauge Ideal Grade guns and only 1917 with ejectors, likely only about 1500 of those still intact as fine collectible, usable shotguns. Most have been well used with little factory original condition remaining.  The Ideal Grade is not rare but finding one with ejectors and HIGH FACTORY ORIGINAL CONDITION, SUPERB MECHANICS, AND PRETTY WOOD IS A RARITY.  With more than one to choose from, how do you know which one to buy? IT IS EASY TO BUY THE WRONG GUN WITH COSTLY ISSUES. At Vintage Firearms (VFI) we inspect each gun before purchase, our 5 gunsmiths clean and service each gun as needed, and on most guns, we strip the actions to the smallest parts, Ultrasonic clean and scrub all parts to shiny metal, inspect all parts for integrity and function, make any replacements or repairs necessary, lubricate and reassemble, providing VFI CERTIFIED GUNS, a $450 service in our shop. THIS IS A VFI CERTIFIED GUN WITH A 90-DAY MECHANICAL WARRANTY providing confidence you are buying a fine shotgun that will provide years of service in the field. Other sellers DO NOT provide this service. Other important factors when buying a shotgun are the condition of the metal, screws, wood, and bores. We provide the most comprehensive photography and specifications in the marketplace to guide you in making an informed choice. Just remember, nowhere is it more apparent than in the gun world…you get what you pay for! If you want an upland gun you can rely on, buy one that is field ready and can safely shoot modern, available field loads.  This 16ga, SN FWE163937 was manufactured in 1938 on a Featherweight frame weighing 6 pounds 9 ounces, more than a quarter pound lighter than most L.C. Smith 16ga. guns!  The gun has modern dimensions (If you would like different dimensions Vintage Firearms offers a stock bending service to perfectly fit the gun to you, please call us with any questions) with well figured wood retaining most of the original factory finish, superb wood-to-metal-fit, excellent checkering, terminating in a vintage Hawkins pad (not a reproduction). The wood has been cleaned and fed some oil by our stock maker and looks vintage to match the rest of the gun, just a few light handling marks. An elegant looking shotgun in profile, this gun looks fast, its fine splinter forend with ebony wedge and capped pistol grip gives it real purpose. The preferred 28” LM/IM choked barrels are tight as new on hinge pin and breech face, with the top lever right of center guaranteeing many years of service.  The metal finishes are factory original with 97% barrel blue, 95% strong case color, 75% charcoal blue on the trigger guard…the gun has that perfect, vintage look defying its 87 years of age.  Somebody took remarkable care of this gun over the decades of use.  The wood to metal fit is superb.  This double is ready for several more generations of action- the Ideal gun! With the upland bird season upon us, this gun will not last long.  There is nothing this gun needs as it has all been fully serviced with a 90-day warranty.  It does need one thing: a date in the field in your hands!  See specifications below.
