The Model 1777 infantry musket was used by French troops and some earlier examples were also sent to North America to assist the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War with continued use through the Napoleonic Wars. This 1818 dated example would have likely been entered into French service just after the close of the Napoleonic Wars. It features a trumpet head ramrod, bottom mounted bayonet lug towards the muzzle, brass blade front sight on the rear strap of the front barrel band, an "1818" date on the upper left barrel flat at the breech, "M1777" marked on the barrel tang, detachable brass flash pan on the lock, Mutzig Arsenal markings at the center of the lock, 1818 dated circular stamp marked on the right of the buttstock, smooth straight grip stock with a cheek recess cutout on the left of the buttstock, three barrel bands, finger grooves on the rear trigger guard tang, and a smooth buttplate. The Mutzig Arsenal, then known as the Manufacture Royale de Mutzig, is in the French town of Mutzig and is located in the Château des Rohan (The Castle of Rohan). The castle’s history dates back to the 13th century, and after the French revolution, it became a small arms factory, as the castle was disowned by the Rohan family and pillaged during the conflict. In 1799, it was bought by the arms manufacturers, brothers Coulaux of Klingenthal, Bas-Rhin, who, on April 20, 1801, opened their weapons factory in its walls. It was at this factory that a native of Mutzig, Antoine Alphonse Chassepot, fabricated some of his famous rifles, one of the most advanced firearms of its time. This example is in .69 caliber with the lockplate marked “Mre Rle / de Mutzig”, indicating manufacture at the French Arsenal located in Mutzig. There are armory proofs and acceptance marks throughout. This one makes a great study in French arsenal markings. Though not the primary military rifle in the following, due to the shortage of armaments, this rifle could have possibly been pushed into service during the Crimean War (1853-1856), the Franco-Prussian War (1871), and even into the American Civil War. The overall condition is good. Bright gray patinaed finish. The original stock is fine with little wear. The action is strong. Legible proofs and markings. Cartouche remnant on the right buttstock. The bore is somewhat dim but retains shimmer. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 44-3/4 inches.
