Description:
YORK, PENNSYVANIA Antique SAMUEL SMALL Long Rifle

Mid-1800s MAPLE GAME GETTING

Here we present an antique S. Small Full Stock Percussion Rifle made circa the Civil War Era in York, Pennsylvania. Samuel Small was a third generation gunmaker during this period, known for his long rifles.

Samuel and his brother, Philip Albright Small, inherited mills, land, and wealth from their industrious father, George Small, who built the original mill on the Codorus Creek in Manchester Township. During the Gettysburg Campaign, the Small brothers were known by, and figured into the plans of, the invading Confederate army. In fact, their mills were a particular target for Major General Jubal A. Early.

Not only were the Smalls’ mills targeted by Jubal Early for their ability to feed his army, their hardware store on Centre Square became the de facto headquarters for York’s Committee of Safety. As Confederate columns approached the area, Union Major Granville Haller was notified at Small’s store that the townspeople wanted the militia gone and would negotiate a peaceful occupation without military resistance. Wagons were used to haul flour from the mill to be given to the Confederates as dictated by Early as part of the deal.

The overall condition is very good. The stock is showcases a nice maple stripe pattern. Most metal parts has settled with a gray patina. Strong action. Darkened bore with serviceable rifling. Lightly engraved and warranted lock. Replacement hammer screw.
