he Springfield XD-40 is Springfield Armory’s polymer-framed, striker-fired handgun in .40 S&W offered across multiple XD generations (Original XD, XD Mod.2, and the XD(M) family). It follows the XD design philosophy: a comfortable ergonomic grip, grip safety, hammer-forged barrel, and a series of sizes from subcompact to full-size/service pistols. The .40 S&W models were popular for duty and personal defense through the 2000s and 2010s due to the cartridge’s terminal performance at the time.

Action: Striker-fired, locked-breech, tilting-barrel short-recoil system.
Frame: Glass-filled polymer frame with molded grip texture and finger-grooves on many early models (later Mod.2 and XD(M) offered different texturing and interchangeable backstraps on some variants).
