Description:
This is a handsome sword that measures 30 1/8" overall, with a 25 3/4" straight, single-edged bade having etched decorative panels. This is a parade version of the short sword issued to artillerymen for brush clearing and general utility, but the blade is very lightweight and is only 3/4" wide. The steel has a mottled gray patina throughout, with areas of freckling along its length on both faces. There are acid-etched decorative panels on the forte on both faces consisting of intricate scrollwork , crown and eagle, and a riband proclaiming "MIT GOTT / FÜR KAISER / UND REICH" on the obverse; scrollwork and a martial panoply on the reverse. The cast brass hilt is nearly identical to the issue swords and has a simple cross guard with reversed quillons, diagonal grooves on the obverse, and a spherical pommel with dome-shaped capstan. The brass has a dark, yellow-ochre patina with a few dark spots of tarnish and minor handling marks scattered about. The sword is housed in its original leather scabbard that has extensive crazing and flaking along the surface, but the seam is still intact, and the brass chape and throat have been polished to bright yellow. This is a seldom seen German dress sword, and would make a very nice addition to a collection.;
