Overview / history (short)

The Ruger P89 is part of Ruger’s P-series of semi-automatic pistols. It was introduced in the late 1980s as Ruger’s full-size, polymer-frame 9×19mm (9mm Luger) service pistol offering. It was marketed as a robust, affordable service-type handgun and competed with other full-size 9mm semi-autos of the era.

The P89 predates the P95 (which came mid-1990s) and shares the same family DNA (locked-breech short-recoil design, hammer-fired DA/SA operation, polymer frame with steel slide).

Design & operation

Action: Short-recoil, locked-breech (Browning-style tilting barrel family).

Fire control: Hammer-fired, double-action / single-action (DA/SA) — first pull double action, subsequent shots single action. Some later variants offered decockers or safety/decocker combinations depending on model.

Frame: Glass-filled nylon (polymer) frame with steel inserts for rails and component mounting; slide and barrel are steel.

Slide/Barrel: Steel slide with typical service-pistol rifled barrel.

Intended role: Full-size duty/defensive/target pistol.

Typical specifications (common values — may vary by production run / variant)

Exact factory numbers changed between runs and variants; treat these as representative.

Caliber: 9×19mm Luger (standard)

Magazine capacity: commonly 15+1 rounds (some markets/regions used lower-capacity magazines like 10 or 12 rounds)

Barrel length: about ~4.25 in (roughly 108 mm) (typical full-size service barrel)

Overall length: in the neighborhood of 7.5–7.8 in (approx.)

Height: roughly 5.0–5.5 in (with magazine)

Width: around 1.25–1.4 in (varies with grip profile)

Weight (unloaded): typically around 29–32 oz (varies by exact model and whether magazines are steel or alloy)

Sights: factory often had a drift-adjustable rear and fixed front, typically three-dot style on many examples; some runs had fixed dovetail sights.

Finish: steel slide usually finished in blued/black; polymer frames normally black or dark gray.

Accessory rail: most original P89s do not have an integrated accessory rail.325
