ENGLISH .50 Caliber Large Bore LONDON MADE Rifle
Here we present an antique British F. Barnes Half Stock Percussion Large Bore Rifle, made circa the mid-19th Century likely in London, England. London and Birmingham was the epicenter for English gunmaking all the way through the turn of the century. This is an English rifle that is elegant in its simplicity and practicality. This hammer gun would have been used primarily for putting game on the table or defending one’s homestead.
During this era, there were many English and Belgian gunmakers who were capitalizing on the eager markets in the United States. This .50 caliber rifle was made in a great caliber to go after big game. Its mid-length 30-inch barrel made for easy hunting in the dense woods or traipsing through the marsh looking for ducks and geese. This would have been a staple of most homesteads hanging over the mantle during the tumultuous times of the mid-1800s.
The overall condition is good. The trigger drops the hammer, although there is no half cock, and the nipple is broken. Original, smooth brown patina. Dim bore with strong rifling. This example is lightly engraved. Legible markings. The crack under the lock has light movement with some pressure. Otherwise, the stock is solid with a smooth finish.
