Description:
CASED Antique J. VENABLES & SON Tranter’s Patent SINGLE SHOT .230 RF Pistol

RETAILER MARKED British CIVIL WAR ERA Rimfire

Here we present an antique Cased J. Venables Retailer Marked W. Tranter’s Patent Break Action Single Shot Rimfire Pistol, made circa 1863 to 1868 in London, England. John Venables is recorded in Oxford, England, alone in 1846-1863, and then 1863-1868 as Venables & Son. William Tranter was a British gunmaker and gun designer famous for inventing the Tranter revolver. Tranter is best known in American firearms collecting for the revolvers that were imported by the Confederacy during the American Civil War.

Their distinctive grip shape makes these pistols immediately recognizable. Many of the pistols produced were medium to large frame. Gunsmith William Tranter was born in 1816 in Oldbury, Birmingham, England. He was the oldest son of Thomas and Mary Tranter. He had four brothers and four sisters, and at the age of 14, in 1830, he apprenticed under the arms firm of Hollis Brothers and Company in Birmingham. Obviously, he acquired good talents, because in 1839 he left the Hollis firm and bought out Robert Dugard’s enterprise, also in Birmingham.
Famous users of Tranter revolvers included Pinkerton Detective Agency founder Allan Pinkerton, North-West Mounted Police, Confederate General James Ewell Brown Stuart, Sherlock Holmes (fictional), and Dr. Richard Jordan Gatling, who owned a .38 caliber First Model Tranter Pocket Revolver in 1857.

The overall condition is fine. Much blue finish is preserved. Excellent action. Bright, strongly rifled bore. Fine, sharply checkered grips. Markings are legible. “LIL” marked on the underside of the barrel. The case is good, although the placard on the lid is absent. The lid does not close squarely close.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 7-1/2 inches.

Caliber: .230 Tranter Rimfire
