Description:
Iconic Pre-WORLD WAR II Era DWM 7.65mm P.08 GERMAN LUGER C&R Pistol HOLSTER

Smaller Cal. Forced Under the TREATY OF VERSAILLES

Here we present a C&R Pre-World War II Era DWM Pistole Parabellum P.08 Semi-Automatic Commercial German Luger Pistol, made circa the early 1930s by Deutsche Waffen-und Munitionsfabriken (DWM) in Berlin, Germany. Basing his design off Hugo Borchardt’s seminal C93, Georg Luger successfully brought Borchardt’s work to practical fruition. While finding buyers for the C93 seemed an exercise in futility, the new Luger Pistol found many countries eager to test it and even adopt it. There are many variations in this field of collecting, but relatively few major changes in overall design from beginning to end. The Luger is certainly one of the most iconic firearms in history, made so by its association with Germany during both World Wars. The “Crown over N” proof mark is located on several areas of the pistol. The “Crown over N” is a German Pre-World War II proof mark used before April 1, 1940. The "N" indicates that the gun has been proofed with "nitro" or smokeless powder. The top of the toggle is marked “DWM”.

The barrel is what is commonly called a "1920 Commercial". The reason for this is that immediately after World War I the German government was forced under the Treaty of Versailles to dispose of their 9mm pistols, so they re-barreled them in the smaller 7.65mm parabellum and large numbers were sold off commercially and to foreign governments. Also, manufacturers such as DWM weren’t allowed to produce 9mm weapons, thus the smaller 7.65mm chambering.

The United States, then as now, was a huge market for firearms of all kinds. During this Great Depression period of the interwar years, along with Prohibition, organized crime, and folk hero robbers and the like, many people wished to arm themselves, not least of which were the gangsters! Jack “Legs” Diamond was an Irish-American gangster and bootlegger out of Philadelphia known to favor just this sort of Luger pistol in .30 (7.65mm)!

Also included with this pistol is a “BAUTZEN/1941” marked reproduction "P08" black leather holster.

The overall condition is very good. Some original finish is preserved in low handled areas. Bright bore with strong rifling. Both grips are lightly handled and remain in good shape. Markings are legible. Excellent action. Very fine repro. holster. “GERMANY” on the front of the frame.
