This is a late WWII assembled P38 using an early zero-series frame with the late war “ac-45” marked slide and early commercial “Crown/N” barrel. Based on the late wartime demands on the German Army, the Walther factory started substituting early left over production parts into the military contract pistols. This example is a blend of the early commercial frame and barrel with a late war slide. The early frame is correctly marked on the right side with only the serial number “025858” while the slide is a correct military model that is stamped on the left side “P. 38/ac-45”. The slide does have the “Eagle/359” Waffenamt proof, along with an “Eagle/Swastika” firing proof, and it does have the second “Eagle/359” acceptance proof, making this pistol extremely rare. The barrel is also numbered on the front lug in the commercial manner with the full zero-series serial number. It is fitted with standard late WWII brown serrated bakelite grips. This is an exceptionally rare Zero Series Walther P.38 from 1945, a true collector’s piece with a limited production run. According to records in Buxton and Whittington’s guides, fewer than 1,800 of these pistols were assembled during March and April of 1945, making it a highly sought-after firearm for enthusiasts and historians alike. The overall condition is good. This example has been refinished. Excellent action. Bright, strongly rifled bore. Sharp markings. Numbers match. Solid grips with average handling evidence. The locking block has been electro-pencil remarked to match the frame. Own the original! This firearm is classified as a Curio & Relic. Barrel is 4-7/8 inches.
