Description:
RARE EARLY WAR ISSUE....Box body measures nominally 7.2"x1.6"x5.8" with the dimensions indicating this Pattern 1861 cartridge box is designed for round ball .69 caliber cartridges. Standard Pattern 1861 features include copper rivet reinforced straps for belt wear, as well as buckles for sling attachment, and a stitched closure tab without a rivet reinforcement. The box includes the tin magazines on the interior and has a US box plate affixed to the exterior flap. A period sling is attached to the box with an Eagle Breastplate. The implement pouch is present on the face of the box, under the exterior flap. The box is unmarked as to maker..
Condition
Good. Leather with moderate to heavy wear, crazing and substantial flaked finish loss with more finish continuing to flake off the leather. Leather is somewhat supple and has the feel of leather treated with Pecard's or a similar product. Sling and closure tab are starting to weaken due to wear. Plates are in about good condition and appear to be original, although their attachment thongs are modern.
