Description:
Manufacturer: American Standard Tool Company (AST Co.), successor to Manhattan Firearms Company; based in Newark, New Jersey. Operated circa 1868 to 1873, closing during the financial panic of 1873
Model: Hero percussion single-shot pocket pistol (aka “boot pistol,” “poor man’s derringer”)
  • Caliber:  .34 caliber, cap-and-ball smoothbore
  • Barrel: Round, screw-off design; commonly 2, 3, and occasionally lengths
  • Frame: Brass, 
  • Grips: Two-piece walnut; earlier models used grip screws, later versions sometimes had pressed-on grips for cost savings?
  • Serial Numbers:
    • Manhattan company: roughly 5,000+ produced, marked HERO/M.F.A.Co.
    • AST Co.: roughly 25,000 to 37,000+ produced, marked A.S.T.Co/HERO.  Manhattan Firearms
Rarity: Many were discarded, lost, or used as toys (“cap pistols”), making fine-condition examples relatively rare
 Company History
  • Manhattan Firearms Company (circa 1857–1868): Initially produced percussion pistols and Colt-style revolvers after Colt’s patent expired
  • 1868: Transitioned to American Standard Tool Co., expanding into industrial tools while continuing firearms production (including the Hero pistol)
  • 1873: Company went out of business amid an economic downturn.

  • Serial Number Range & Dating: AST Co. models estimated from ~11,000 to 48,000+  serial falls neatly within AST Co.’s production run (11,000–48,000+).  Manhattan Firearms.
  • Barrel: 3" round screw off barrel smoothbore with oxidized bore and mottled gun-metal-gray patina.
  • Frame Finish: Brass frame with smoky tarnish and minor handling wear.
  • Hammer & Trigger: Traces of original case coloring visible.
  • Grips: Smooth walnut with light handling marks; very good condition.
  • Mechanics: Appears original and consistent with collector-grade condition.    functions but should remain a display/non-firing piece.
