Description:
NSN, .577 Caliber, 39" barrel with a very good, lightly pitted bore. This musket has an 1862-dated, "TOWER" marked lock, without "(Crown) / VR" cypher, and has no British military acceptance proofs or markings. The barrel has an overall dull gray mixing with pale brown color with London civil proofs at the breech, while the lock has a slightly darker gray and plum-brown patina with minor freckling throughout, and some thin pitting on the hammer and around the nipple bolster. The walnut stock has been sanded and a thick oil finish added over numerous small handling marks and minor blemishes scattered throughout. The brass trigger guard, buttplate, and forend cap have a dull ochre patina throughout, with some brighter yellow metal on the lower guard tang and on the buttplate tang. No import markings are visible. The sling swivels have been removed, and a Springfield type, tulip-head iron ramrod is present. The action is fully functional and locks firmly at both half and full-cock. The musket is accompanied by a correct Enfield socket bayonet that measures 20 1/2" overall, with a 17" angular blade having a single fuller, and hollow-ground back flutes. The metal has an overall dark gray patina throughout, with light-moderate pitting along the blade, shank, and socket. Original markings can be seen on the ricasso, and the locking ring is still present and functional. This is a good-very good commercially produced Pattern 1853 Enfield musket overall, with a Civil War dated lock and correct bayonet. Antique;
