The smith proudly noted his advanced age, a rare and desirable feature in sword inscriptions. The blade measures 27.75 inches in length with exceptional proportions: a wide motohaba of 34.61mm and a stout motokasane of 8.37mm, giving the sword a very heavy and powerful feel. The shape is bold and substantial, typical of strong late Edo period construction. A dragon horimono is carved into the blade, adding dramatic visual appeal. The tang is ubu with a long, crisply cut signature and date. Mounted in unusual presentation koshirae, featuring an ornate lacquer saya decorated in gilt floral scrollwork, with matching brass fittings and ray skin hilt components. These mounts, together with the elaborate horimono, emphasize the status of this sword as a prestigious piece from the final years of the samurai era. A very substantial late Edo katana with dated mei and horimono, full of presence, artistry, and historical importance. Price: $5,500.00 |
