Description:
This is a British military India Pattern Brown Bess Bayonet for the Brown Bess smoothbore musket. This example was made by Henry Osborn, who produced India Pattern bayonets from 1796&1808, when he entered into partnership with John Gunby. Osborn's name was stamped in a distinctive copperplate script. The triangular blade exhibits a spear shape and the two "bottom" sides are fluted to within 2.5" of the collar. The top, flat portion bears several stamps: a British crown over "3" proof mark, "Osborn", an indistinguishable set of characters, and an "X" on the ricasso. Socket has typical mortise with reinforced collar and the collar is split at the opening, no locking ring. Bayonet bears a nice "tarnished-silver" color with scattered gray spots overall. This specimen is 21 ½" long overall, a 17" long blade, and a 4" long socket. Please see photo's for fine details.;
