WORLD WAR I Era Lever Action Made in 1917
Here we present a C&R Winchester Model 1892 Lever Action Rifle chambered in .38-40 Winchester Center Fire, made in 1917 in New Haven, Connecticut. Another fantastic design from the mind of John Moses Browning, the 1892 was made to replace the venerable and iconic 1873 and featured its pistol caliber chamberings. The result was a trim and light rifle that was an immediate hit and stayed in production for almost 50 years. Many gun owners favored Winchester rifles for their ability to fire the same ammunition as their pistols, though not in this caliber, meaning that a cowboy, trapper or stagecoach defender could take along his trust rifle and pistol sidearm with only one supply of ammo!
In April 1919, Winchester eliminated the “18” and “19” from the model names of all of the various models that were in active production. So, after this date, the Model 1892 would have been the Model 92.
This example was special ordered with a half magazine.
The overall condition is nearing fine. Excellent action. The bore is shiny bright with serviceable rifling. Fine stock and forend. Legible markings. This example has a nice Lyman rear peep sight. The barrel is a factory replacement. Traces of original finish remain on the receiver.
