These are frequently encountered in the US, owing to the M1809 musket’s use during the U.S. Civil War. The bayonet is unusual in that it lacks the mortise commonly found on socket bayonets. In 1861, the Union purchased 165,000 Prussian arms, most of which were obsolete smoothbore M1809 percussion muskets with bayonets. This example is in very good condition with a 19 1/4" blade, 3" socket and 22 1/2" OA. The base of the blade at the neck is marked with an 8 and some other marks. The side of the neck is marked 69 with no other markings. The M1839 scabbard is in very good condition and these two items could have served together in the field. This was worn on shoulder belt as was popular in the day but fazed out of use within the next 10 years. There are no markings of the brass throat or finial, leather is supple, tight stitching and has most of the original finish.; Price: $189.00 |
