Description:
SCARCE 1850s Antique SUPERPOSED LOAD Two Shot Percussion MULE EAR Rifle

SINGLE BARREL with TWO SEPARATE IGNITION CHAMBERS

Here we present an antique Mule Ear American Superposed Load Two Shot Half Stock Percussion Rifle made circa the mid-1800s. All the way back through pre-flintlock days, the pursuit for a repeating firearm was a concept on the mind of gun designers and innovators of the time. The goal was simply to develop a more efficient firearm that could allow the user to off as many shots as possible with minimum effort. A concept emerged during this period to load several loads of powder and ball into a single barrel instead of relying on multiple barrels.

This concept called for several flash holes to be cut into the barrel at the location of each separate charge inside the barrel. The ignition would work separately from front to rear, with the goal being to launch the first load in the stack without setting off the other charges behind. These arms came to be known as "superposed" loaded guns. Several different versions of these “superposed” loaded firearms were developed throughout the black powder era.

The overall condition is good. Mixed brown and gray patinas throughout. The stock is revarnished with a repair around the barrel pin. The short hammer doesn’t sit in the cocked position while the long hammer functions strongly. The bore retains shimmer with sharp rifling. Absent ramrod, both lugs are dented.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 30 inches.

Caliber: .41 Percussion

Overall condition as seen in photos.
