The SKS (Samozaryadny Karabin sistemy Simonova) was originally developed in the Soviet Union in 1945 and quickly became a staple in Eastern Bloc and Communist-aligned countries. While it was eventually overshadowed by the AK-47, the SKS remained in use for decades due to its accuracy, simplicity, and rugged design.
Norinco, China’s state-owned arms manufacturer, began mass-producing the SKS in the 1950s. Chinese SKS rifles—especially those imported in the 1980s and early 1990s—are well known for their quality and affordability. Due to changes in U.S. import laws, Norinco firearms are no longer imported, making these rifles increasingly collectible.
