The tang bears the signature ???? (Sasamori Masanobu), identifying the smith as a member of the Masanobu line. The carving of the mei is bold and deliberate, consistent with late Edo craftsmanship. The blade displays a lively gunome-midare hamon with bright activity along the edge. The kissaki is well formed with a healthy boshi, and the polish reveals strong definition throughout. Its proportions — substantial length for a wakizashi, graceful curvature, and crisp lines — are characteristic of the Shin-Shinto period (late 18th–19th century), when swordsmiths revived classical styles with robust workmanship. At just over 21 inches, this is a large and impressive wakizashi that would have served as a formidable companion to the katana. Signed examples from this school are desirable, particularly in fine condition and housed in proper storage mounts. A very attractive and well-preserved Shin-Shinto wakizashi signed Sasamori Masanobu, ideal for collectors seeking a signed late Edo piece. Price: $2,495.00 |
