Description:
ENGRAVED Antique T.W. COFER 10 Gauge Double Barrel SxS PERCUSSION Shotgun

CIVIL WAR Era Hunting/Fowling Gun BRITISH PROOFED

Here we present an antique British Proofed Engraved T.W. Cofer Half Stock Double Barrel Side by Side Percussion Shotgun, manufactured circa the early 1860s in Portsmouth, Virginia. Thomas Wrenn Cofer (1828-1885) of Portsmouth, Virginia designed a revolver in 1861 that was produced by T.W. Cofer & Co. until the fall of Portsmouth in May 1862. Shotguns from his shop are also known to have been used by Confederates. He later ran a gun store on Union Street in Norfolk, Virginia, until his death in 1885. This shotgun's barrels have a broad flat rib with a bead front sight, arrow engraving, "London Fine Twist" in silver inlay, scroll engraving, nickel-silver bands at the breech, and Birmingham proofs. The locks are marked "T W Cofer", and the German silver mounts feature scroll and game scene engraving.

This gun features a double trigger system. The early doubles used two triggers, one for each barrel, located front to back inside the trigger guard. The index finger was used to pull either trigger, as having two fingers inside the trigger guard can cause a very undesirable recoil-induced double-discharge. Double-trigger designs are typically set up for right-handed users. In double-trigger designs, it is often possible to pull both triggers at once, firing both barrels simultaneously, though this is generally not recommended as it doubles the recoil, battering both shotgun and shooter, particularly if it was unanticipated or unintended. Discharging both barrels at the same time has long been a hunting trick employed by hunters using 8 gauge "elephant" shotguns, firing the two two-ounce slugs for sheer stopping power at close range.

This 10 gauge shotgun was a popular gauge in this era, due to the ability to use it for medium or large size game, along with waterfowl. This would have been a staple of most homesteads in Britain and America hanging over the mantle during the tumultuous times of the mid-1800s to provide food or to defend the homestead.

1-3/4 inch drop at comb. 2-3/4 inch drop at heel. 10 lbs overall weight.

The overall condition is good. Original brown patina. The markings are obfuscated on the lock plates but otherwise legible. The stock is re-varnished and shows average handling wear. The wrist checkering is worn. The action functions with only the right side having a safety notch. The bores are dark but remain good for their ages. Gold and silver inlays are present on the barrel with some portions missing. The triggerguard has an inscription that appears to read “G.G.”

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.
