Description: Near Mint Unissued Harpers Ferry 1842 .69 Musket Offered here for sale and just acquired is this superb U.S. Model 1842 Musket. The U.S. Model 1842 musket is an important transitional arm in American arms history. It became the U.S. Army’s standard musket beginning in the early 1840s. It was the first U.S. service musket produced as a percussion (cap) musket as standard It was a smoothbore military musket designed for massed infantry volley fire — used in the Mexican–American War era and widely present in the years before and during the Civil War. Harpers Ferry Armory produced numerous M1842 muskets as is this specimen. It has a manufacture/inspection of 1851. During the 1850s–1860s many M1842s were rifled or altered (and some re-bored to .58 cal) to function as rifled muskets for the Civil War. An unissued, near?mint, unmodified .69 smoothbore is comparatively rare. It has the standard barrel length: 42 inches. Overall length is about 58 inches and it weighs approximately 10–11 pounds.Percussion lock; single barrel, smoothbore; socket bayonet fitted on the barrel/band. The musket is stamped “HARPERS FERRY” and “U.S.” proofs/inspection marks.Typically finished bright this specimen’s metal was lightly cleaned of surface patina so returned to its bright finish. The inspector initials/marks on the stock flats and metal parts are PERFECT. The untouched walnut stock with original cartouches appears unissued with just a slight “nick” in right side buttstock adjacent to steel plate. The lockplate stamping on maker and date are sharp and while the “eagle” appears to be off -struck and is light on one side. A very fine conditioned 1842 musket which should occupy a lofty position in any collection -especially Civil war as this is truly the weapon which occupied arsenals at its start. Thanks for your bid.
