Description:
A true American classic, the M1 US Rifle, or M1 Garand, is an icon of United States military history. The rifle replaced the Springfield M1903 bolt-action rifle in 1936 as the official issued military rifle of the US Armed Forces and was retired in the 1970s after its prolonged service in National Guard units. Both during and post-service, though, the United States continued to sell and supply other allied countries with M1 rifles through the 1980s, including South Vietnam during the Vietnam conflict, South Korea during and post-Korean War, and currently in service with the Philippines Honor Guard; the rifle continues to be a common ceremonial rifle around the world, however. Marked to fire ".30 M1" caliber rifle rounds, the M1 Garand fires .30-06 Springfield cartridges, but are generally only safe to use lighter-pressured Garand-safe ammunition, whether surplus military M1 ball ammunition or newly-manufactured .30-06 specific for M1s. The rifle is a gas-operated semi-automatic rifle with a 24" barrel with bayonet mount. This particular rifle was made in 1955 by the Harrington & Richardson company and features all post-war upgrades and modifications as would be seen on rifles utilized during the Korean and Vietnamese Conflicts. These include the adjustable T105E1 rear sight, relief cut on the operating rod, and stamped Type 2 trigger guard assembly. The reciever has been marked with "RRAD," indicating that it was re-arsenaled (reviewed and repaired) at the Red River Armory (Red River Army Depot); markings indicate this was received by them in October of 1965 and the stock has a P with square marking, showing it likely had parts replaced at that time—likely including the June 1965-manufactured barrel. The bolt also does not match the receiver, in that it is marked to have been from an older 1942-1944-manufactured batch. This H&R rifle is a pretty typical example of a later M1 Garand that likely was built from extra parts and used as a training rifle or National Guard rifle. The barrel rifling looks very good and furniture is not damaged. The parkerized finish on the parts is uniform and does not exhibit any rust or corrosion. The metal buttplate with hinged storage compartment does have a significant amount of rust, however. This rifle includes (what seems to be) an authentic M1907 leather rifle sling but does not include a box, case, or any en bloc clips. .30M1
