The Mossberg Model 144LS is a post-World War II bolt-action rimfire target rifle built by O.F. Mossberg & Sons and intended as a precision small-bore piece rather than a general plinker — it grew out of Mossberg’s wartime training rifles and was offered as a dedicated target variant with features tuned for bench and paper-target use. Chambered for .22 (Short/Long/Long Rifle), the LS version is most often encountered with a heavy, “semi-free-floating” target barrel (commonly a 26-inch tube in the LS era), a 10-round box magazine, and an adjustable, competition-oriented trigger and stock, including a cheekpiece and hand-stop that make consistent sighting and cheek weld easier. The “LS” designation reflects factory fitment with Lyman competition sights (a Lyman front and a Lyman rear aperture) and other target-grade fittings; later subvariants (LSA/LSB) changed sights, barrel diameters, and some stock/length details. Collectors and shooters praise the 144 series for surprisingly good accuracy for the price and era, and the 144LS in particular is remembered as a compact, well-appointed junior/target rifle produced during the 1950s.
