Description:
J. Purdey cal. 303 sidelock double rifle, 25-1/2" chopper lump barrels with rib inscribed "Sir Joseph Whitworth pressed steel". Proofed for 37 grains riflelite.    One standing, two folding rear sights regulated at 100/200/300 yards.  "J.Purdey & Sons  Audley House South Audley Street London" completes the barrel address.  The bolstered swing underlever side clip action employs the Purdey self opening system, and an actuated third bite engaged as the lever snaps closed.  Quite a bit of engineering here insuring a rock solid closure.  This was an era of design and competition, Purdeys were not to be outdone!  Wonderful rose and scroll in the Purdey house pattern, 100% coverage of the action and locks.  Double triggers, bolted safety. The action and locks retain a blush of pleasing color hardening.  Splinter for end and pistol grip stock of fabulous figured French walnut of rich amber color and striking black smokey burl figure throughout.  Graced with classic oval cheek piece, the length of pull is 14-1/2" to a checkered butt.  The Medford rifling is excellent.  Weight 9 lbs., 6 oz. This wonderful Purdey rifle completed in 1897 can be sold directly as an Antique. Original oak and leather case with Maker's label.
