Instead of developing an entirely new handgun from scratch, Safari Arms began by taking existing firearms—most notably the Colt Government Model—and outfitting them with the kinds of upgrades that were becoming increasingly popular among competitive shooters, law enforcement, and serious enthusiasts. This approach gave customers access to custom-style pistols without the long wait times or higher costs associated with one-off gunsmithing. By bridging the gap between factory production and full custom work, Safari Arms carved out a niche as a semi-custom manufacturer that delivered ready-to-use pistols with premium features. The Colt Government was their primary platform of choice because it was not only the most iconic 1911 variant but also the most widely available and trusted base gun of the time. Safari Arms recognized that many shooters were already investing in modifications to their Colts—such as enhanced sights, extended safeties, or beavertail grip safeties—so offering these enhancements as factory-completed upgrades was both practical and appealing.
By focusing on the Government Model, Safari Arms ensured that its work was immediately recognizable and marketable to the broadest audience of 1911 enthusiasts. Safari Arms’ customized Colt Governments often included extended thumb safeties, lowered and flared ejection ports, beveled magazine wells, polished feed ramps, improved checkering, and sometimes skeletonized hammers or Commander-style triggers. They even altered slide serrations and ergonomics with undercut trigger guards and carry bevel treatments, resulting in pistols that were more user-friendly, faster to operate, and visually distinctive. The quality of their work was consistently praised—machining was clean, fit was solid, and the pistols functioned reliably under demanding conditions. This combination of well-executed custom features made Safari Arms highly desirable in their day and continues to make them collectible pieces of 1911 history today.
