Description: The Springfield Model of 1903 was the standard-issue military rifle of the United States from 1903 to 1936 (and thereafter used as a military sniper rifle into the 1970s). In the aftermath of the First World War, the US chose to contract Springfield Armory for rifles to be built using the M1903 pattern of rifle, but chambered in the affordable .22 Long Rifle cartridge. These rifles were first built in 1918-1919, before the contract was stopped due to inadequate quality of deliveries. The design was revisited by a board of designers and thus the Springfield Armory Model 1922 rifle was born. This rifle would go on to have two later revisions, the M1 and M2. This rifle for sale is an M2 rifle with many original-arsenal components. The M2 variant of the 1922 was first introduced in 1937 and ended in 1942. This rifle's barrel code is marked 'SA 4-37,' indicating it is an original Springfield barrel built in April of 1937. The 24" barrel and receiver feature a military parkerized finish. The bolt and other components are also marked with various 'B2' and 'M2' markings throughout, indicating they were built specifically for the 1922 M2 rifles, not reworked from previous stock. Further showing this piece's original condition, the rifle is fitted with a set of Lyman target sights—a 48C adjustable target rear peep sight with specifications tailored for the M2; a dovetailed hooded 17A front target sight features a single fixed post, but can be interchanged with other Lyman 17A inserts. The oil-finished plain walnut stock has a sporterized forend, but is stamped with a circled-P—indicating official armory status at one point—and a boxed 'SA W'—markings showing the stock was built by Winchester Repeating Arms for Springfield Armory. This stock also features a steel checkered buttplate with trapdoor storage compartment. The rifle features a grooved trigger and is fed from an original 5-round detachable magazine. These Springfield 1922 rifles—all variants—are known for having very smooth actions and excellent accuracy. Though often found at high prices, these rifles offer impressive performance for rimfire enthusiasts and are a very interesting, rare piece of military arms history for collectors. This rifle has an excellent action and is in very good condition. The barrel and stock both exhibit indications of refinishing, as some markings are shallow without sharp edges. But, many of these components are original to the period, based off codes and other qualities. The barrel rifling on this piece is clean, with bright surfaces and no signs of rust or pitting. This rifle does not include a box or case, but will include a white-painted leather rifle sling. .22 Long Rifle Price: $1,699.99 Curio/Relic: Yes Chambers: .22 Long Rifle Metal Condition: Very good Wood Condition: Good Bore Condition: Excellent Barrels: 24 Triggers: Grooved trigger Stock Dimensions: 13" LOP Fore End: Oil-finished plain walnut Butt Pad: Checkered steel buttplate with hinged storage compartment Weight: 9 lbs.
