Description:
Antique FRENCH TULLE ARSENAL Gras M1874/80 M14 Bolt Action MILITARY Rifle W/ Bayonet

WORLD WAR I Era MILITARY Proofed INFANTRY Rifle

Here we present an antique French Tulle Arsenal Gras Model 1874/80 M14 Rifle, made circa the 1880s at the armory in Tulle, France and upgraded in 1914 with a production run between 1874 and 1888. The Gras Modèle 1874 M80 was the primary French service rifle of the late 19th century. This rifle design was modified in 1880 as the M80 with an improved breechblock and in 1914 was upgraded to the M14 to accommodate the 8×50mmR Lebel smokeless powder cartridge. The Gras used by the French Army was an adaptation to metallic cartridge of the Chassepot breech-loading rifle by Colonel Basile Gras.

This rifle was a robust and hard-hitting single shot weapon. It was replaced by the Lebel rifle in 1886, the first rifle to use smokeless gunpowder. In the meantime, about 400,000 Gras rifles had been manufactured. The metallic-cartridge Gras was manufactured in response to the development of the metallic cartridge designed by Colonel Boxer in 1866 (Boxer cartridge), and the British 1870 Martini-Henry rifle. Those were soon emulated by the Germans with the 1871 Mauser.

The receiver is clearly marked MANUFACTURE D'ARMES Tulle Mle 1874 over M80 - M14 on the receiver.

The overall condition is good. Traces of original blue finish with the rest maturing to a plum patina. The stock is solid with less than expected handling wear. Buttstock is marked “17” on the left side and “1042/9206” on the right with other military proofs. Visible numbers match with the exceptions of the bayonet lug and cleaning rod. The action is strong. The bore is bright with sharp rifling. Good bayonet and scabbard. Legible markings.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 31 inches.
