Payment Types Accepted: M/C, VISA, American Express and Discover Description: "This is a fine late 18th to early 19th century Spanish officer’s smallsword (espada de ceñir), distinguished by its blue-and-gilt decorated blade and strong royalist associations. Hilt: The gilt-brass hilt features a double shell guard with scalloped edges, a knuckle bow, and a globular pommel with fluted ornamentation. The grip is wood, tightly wrapped with twisted copper wire and ribbing, giving an elegant and secure hold. The overall hilt form reflects late Bourbon period Spanish officer’s swords, combining both decorative appeal and symbolic authority. Blade: The straight, double-edged blade is richly blued and gilt with foliate and martial motifs. One side bears the boldly inscribed motto “POR DIOS POR LA LEY POR EL REY" (“For God, For the Law, For the King"), a famous Spanish royalist slogan of loyalty to crown and church. Further along the blade are gilt cyphers of a crowned “R" and a crowned coat of arms, likely representing the Bourbon monarchy during the reign of Charles IV (1788–1808). Despite age-related wear, much of the blue and gilt finish remains intact, showing fine quality workmanship. Scabbard: Retains its leather scabbard with gilt-brass mounts, including a suspension band with carrying ring and a reinforced drag. The mounts show decorative scalloping consistent with Spanish officer swords of the period. Period & Use: This sword is characteristic of the late 18th to early 19th century, used by Spanish officers as a dress or court sword (espada de gala) rather than a battlefield weapon. Its decoration and motto embody the royalist ideals of the Bourbon monarchy. Condition: Very good overall for its age, with intact hilt, strong wire wrap, and scabbard present. Blade retains significant portions of the original blue and gilt decoration with clear inscriptions. Some patina and wear are present, but the sword remains a striking and historic example.
