PRE-WOODSMAN .22 LR “TARGET” Pistol C&R TARGET MODEL First Series of WOODSMAN PISTOLS Here we present a C&R Colt Pre-Woodsman Target Pistol made in 1925 in Hartford, Connecticut. The Target Model was the base model and featured a 6-1/2" barrel with adjustable front and rear sights. These guns weren't initially called "Woodsman," but simply "Automatic Target Pistol." Colt soon noticed the model's popularity with outdoorsman, however, and added the "Woodsman" name in 1927. The original Colt .22 Target Model, as is this one, was designed by John Moses Browning prior to production beginning in 1915. There are three Woodsman series with the first running from 1915 to 1947, the second from 1947 to 1955, and third from 1955 to 1977. Each series had a Target Model, a Sport Model, and a Match Target Model. All models were very similar in most aspects. For example, the Sport Model is basically a Target Model with a shorter barrel and maybe different sights, and the Match Target Models again were nearly the same but with a beefier barrel. The Woodsman has had several well known fans, among them Ernest Hemingway, General George S. Patton, and Harry Selby, the white hunter made famous by Robert Ruark. Colt stopped production in 1977 because the design, which requires considerable handwork in production, became too expensive to produce and compete with more modern pistols. The overall condition is fine. Original blue finish. The action is excellent. The bore is bright with sharp rifling. The grips are solid. A great example of a beloved Colt! Own the Original!
