Description:
CASED PAIR of ENGRAVED Antique WHEELER & SON of London PERCUSSION Pistols

1830s-40s ENGLISH SELF DEFENSE Handguns

Here we present an antique Brace of Wheeler & Son Pistols in a fitted case, made circa the 1830s-40s in Birmingham, England. Between 1767 and 1813, Robert Wheeler has a shop in London and was known for making box-lock flintlock pocket pistols with spring bayonets and flintlock dueling pistols. Under Royal Government contract, he was also known for making brass barrel flintlock blunderbusses, flintlock holster pistols, and musketoons. He had a contract with the Hudson’s Bay Company for flintlock trade muskets. Wheeler was also one of the sixteen contractors hired by the British Board of Ordnance during the War of 1812 to produce trade guns for Native American allies and delivered a total of 1,491 Northwest Trade Guns between 1813 and 1816. The firm was renamed Robert Wheeler & Son in 1814 and remained active until 1843 and marked his guns “London”. Wheeler is known to have produced a wide array of pistols and long guns for government contracts as well as export.

These pistols would have been “traveling” pistols, made to be large enough for fighting but small enough for walking around with them in a belt. The case is fitted to the guns and is appropriate for the age. They come with a powder flask as well as two cap canisters.

The overall condition is very good. Strong Damascus patterns on the barrels. Neat engraving on the locks. The actions are excellent. The bores are smooth and patinated. The stocks has minor splits and remain solid. One of the ramrods is absent. The case is in good condition showing age-related wear and minor exterior loss.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrels are 4 inches.

Calibers: .52 Percussion

Overall condition as seen in photos.
