Description:
This is a very handsome saber that measures 37 1/4" overall, with a 32 1/4" curved, single-edged blade having wide single fullers, and drop-point. The blade has a mostly bright gray patina with dark spots along its length, with some small spots of surface oxidation at the forte and ricasso on the obverse face. The ricasso is marked: "US / P / LS (Luther Sage & inspector) / N. STARR." The Prussian-inspired hilt has a single forward-swept quillon, reverse P guard, and dove head pommel. The metal has an overall mottled gray patina while the grooved wooden grip is missing the original leather covering and now has an old black painted finish. The original steel scabbard has traces of the original japanned finish with the balance turned dull plum-brown. This is a good-about very good example of an early US cavalry saber.
