This is an antique Winchester 1886 rifle in 40-82 caliber with special order half length button magazine. S/N 48650 made in 1890. The original barrel bluing remains strong with consistent color throughout. The receiver walls, as well as the hammer and lever have taken on a pleasing darker silver-grey patina with some light original case colors showing through. The fire blue on loading gate remains quite vivid. The underside of frame and buttplate have worn to mostly a lighter silver-grey patina. The wood is excellent with some subtle grain patterning present. There are no notable marks and it has a very nice and natural looking finish. It does appear to have been refreshed at some point, but the work was light and very well done with the wood fit remaining about flush or even proud of metal in critical areas. The 26" octagon barrel has a pristine bore, very nearly mirror, with excellent rifling and no discrepancies. The mechanical functions are also flawless, butter smooth and crisp with a positive half cock safety. The original sight package consists of a German silver front and Winchester sporting rear with elevator. Comes with a Cody research letter confirming production and configuration as described.
