Spectacular Winchester Model 53 Rifle C. 1927 Near New
Offered here and just acquired is a classic and seldom encountered Winchester lever action rifle- the Model 53. The Winchester Model 53 is the takedown, small?game lever rifle Winchester offered in the interwar period. It was made as a lightweight, accurate sporting rifle intended for small game and target work and is well known for being a nicely finished takedown gun with relatively fine sights and good balance.
The .25-20 WCF is a small, low recoil centerfire cartridge long used for varmints and small game. It was popular in late 19th/early 20th century American hunting and target circles for low noise and light recoil. A .25?20 Model 53 with a 22″ barrel and takedown capability is exactly the type of specimen many collectors look for: short barrel, factory takedown system , and chambering in a classic small bore cartridge.
Serial number 988425, dated 1927, 22″ barrel, half magazine, takedown model, appears to show very little use. The 22″ barrel is consistent with a “carbine / handy” configuration and is desirable for collectors who prefer the shorter barrel. The minor marks on metal and wood are more storage than use marks.
Takedown Model 53s are sought after because takedown functionality is elegant and original takedown rifles are rarer than non?takedown lever rifles.
The Model 53 Winchester is coveted by collectors due to its scarcity as opposed to the Model 92 (which shares the same serial range) and found in any condition are uncommon. When a near mint specimen is uncovered especially in this vintage (almost 100 years old) it becomes a special acquisition for the serious Winchester collector and could hold a lofty position in any collection of fine arms.
