Description:
SAVAGE M23D Bolt Action .22 HORNET “Small Game/Varmint” Rifle C&R w/SCOPE

ACCURATE & PRECISE .22 Hornet Cal. Repeating Rifle

Here we present a C&R Savage Model 23D Bolt Action Rifle, made in Utica, New York during its production run between 1933 and 1947. The Savage Model 23D is a .22 Hornet caliber rifle known for its precision and historical significance. It was produced for small game hunters and target shooters who valued the Hornet’s accuracy and low recoil. This gun is the gun that collectors and shooting enthusiasts was based on its performance and its embodiment during a significant era in firearm manufacturing history.

Arthur W. Savage, founder of Savage Arms, was a restless and inventive individual born in Kingston, Jamaica, in 1857. Educated in Baltimore and the UK, he traveled extensively—seeking precious stones in Australia, exploring, homesteading, and cattle ranching. He married and had eight children before returning to Jamaica to pursue coffee and banana farming. Later, he managed the Utica Belt Line Railroad in New York while tinkering with firearm designs. In 1894, he founded Savage Arms, launching his line with the Model 1895 lever-action rifle. His most notable firearm, the Model 1899, featured innovative cartridges and a detachable rotary magazine. After selling the company around 1905, Savage moved to California, where he founded the successful Savage Tire Company and continued to pursue firearms interests.

The overall condition is good. The action is strong but the bolt handle intermittently makes contact with the scope mount. Some original blue finish. The stock is very good with light handling wear. Bright bore with serviceable rifling. Legible markings. Good “Bausch and Lomb No. 102051” sight with a missing rear lens cover.
