SAVAGE ARMS M1899 .300 Savage Lever Action DEER HUNTING/SPORTING Rifle C&R

1923 NEW YORK Mfg. Longarm Tapped for Scope

Here we present a C&R Savage Arms Model 1899 Lever Action Rifle, made in Utica, New York in 1923. The founder of Savage Arms, Arthur W. Savage was a restless and very productive sort who did a little bit of everything during his lifetime. He was born in Kingston, Jamaica to British parents in 1857. He went to school in Baltimore, Maryland in the United States and then in the UK. From there he moved about until he found himself in Australia looking for precious stones, exploring, homesteading and running cattle. He married and started his family (8 children) there before moving to Jamaica to try his hand at agriculture. Some sources say that he grew coffee and some bananas; likely, it was both.

He then managed the Utica Belt Line Railroad in New York while also experimenting with firearm designs. In 1894, he founded his own company, competing with Winchester, starting with the Model 1895 lever-action rifle. His most famous is the Model 1899, known for its innovative magazine and cartridges, which still influence firearms today. Around 1905, he sold the company, moved to California, and founded the Savage Tire Company, continuing his interest in firearms and innovation.
