Description:
Starr Cavalry Carbine ... Civil War ... FINE ... CASE COLOR .... LAYAWAY? Hardto find in higher condition!
.54 caliber. 21" barrel. SN: 11398. Blued and color casehardened finish, brass furniture, walnut stock and forend secured by a screw and a single solid, spring-retained brass barrel band. Single shot dropping breech percussion breechloading carbine with L-shaped leaf rear sight, front sight blade, and saddle ring opposite lock. Back action lock marked in two lines STARR ARMS CO/YONKERS, N.Y. Barrel marked STARR ARMS CO YONKERS, N.Y. in a single line between the rear sight and the barrel band. H.G.H. sub-inspection mark on left of chamber. No cartouche visible in wood. Some 20,601 were produced circa 1862-1865 with the majority seeing Civil War service with Union Cavalry regiments, including the 1st Arkansas, 5th Kansas and 24th New York Cavalry. A search of the Springfield Research Service serial number books did not find this carbine, but the closest numbers were all issued to the 1st Arkansas Cavalry with #11388 going to Company C and #11362 and #11428 were both issued to Company M.
CONDITION:.... FINE ... . Bore FINE+ hazy/Mirror lightly oxidized with nice rifling. Barrel with some faded and worn period blue. Receiver with a moderate amount of faded case colors that may also be period refurbishment. Markings remain clear and legible in metal, none visible in wood. Great functional action. Brass with medium dark mustard patina. Wood with minor wear, May have been lightly sanded long. Toe of stock with a grain crack. .
