First produced in 1947 and originally known as the K-38 Target Masterpiece, it was renamed the Model 14 in 1957 when all Smith & Wesson revolvers were given numerical model numbers. It is built on the same medium-sized frame (K-frame) as the seminal Smith & Wesson Model 10 ("Military and Police") revolver. The K-38 model was authorized for duty with the Los Angeles Police Department in the 1960s and early 1970s. The frame on this example lacks the Model 14 markings, which as mentioned above, was introduced around 1957. When introduced, it was intended for bullseye target shooting competition of the type then most common on the United States, which is today called NRA Precision Pistol, specifically in the "centerfire" category. This six-shot double action revolver has adjustable open sights and is chambered for the .38 Special cartridge. The grip frame has the S&W factory return dates for November 1975 ("11 75") and April 1970 ("4 70") and S&W refurbishment markings. The overall condition is fine. Factory blue and case colors. The action is excellent in both single and double action. The bore is shiny bright with sharp rifling. The grips are solid. Numbers match. Own the original!
