With BILLY CLUB, BADGE, I.D. CARD, and OBITUARY
Here we present a C&R Kansas Deputy Sheriff Colt New Pocket Revolver, made in 1905 by the Colt Manufacturing Company with a production run from 1893 through 1905 in Hartford, Connecticut. This set belonged to Robert E. Hays, who at various points of his life was a master mechanic, Justice of the Peace, and Sheriff’s Deputy in Johnson County, Kansas. In addition to the Colt there is his badge, his appointment as Special Deputy Sheriff, a billy club, and his obituary.
The New Pocket followed the introduction of Colt’s first large frame Double Action revolvers known as the Model 1889 Navy and Model 1892 New Army and Navy. These were the first Colts with a swing-out cylinder, with most of these early revolvers going to the U.S. Navy and U.S. Army and is a design concept that is still found today on all modern day double action revolvers.
This revolver was available in both .32 Long Colt and .32 S&W. It holds 6 shots and was offered in barrel lengths of 2-1/2”, 3-1/2”, 5”, and 6”. The frame is stamped “Colt’s New Pocket” and was available in either a blued or nickel plated finish. There were approximately 30,000 of the little self defense revolvers manufactured during its 12 year production run. This is actually a pretty scarce little revolver.
The overall condition is fine. Much original blue is preserved. Excellent action. The bore has dimmed with some light spotting and maintains serviceable rifling. Both grips are fine. Markings are sharp. The oath card was in tatters but has been professionally restored so as to be legible. The accessories and accoutrements are in good shape and seem to have the stories to tell!
