Description:
RARE Antique US COLT Second Contract FLUCK DRAGOON .44 Percussion Revolver

One of the Few Replacements for Colt Walkers!

Here we present a rare antique U.S. Colt Second Contract Fluck Dragoon Revolver, manufactured circa 1848 in Hartford, Connecticut. This dragoon variant was assembled at Hartford to fill Colt’s second contract for 1,000 Dragoon revolvers using residual Colt Walker parts and Whitneyville number dies. This variation was nicknamed the “Walker Replacement Dragoons” when identified by researcher John J. Fluck in 1956, which resulted in the other moniker for these large revolvers: “Fluck Dragoons”. He estimated 300 were made to replace the Walker revolvers that had failed and indicated they were made for the U.S. military using original Walker parts and reworked parts. These are among the rarest of the roughly 19,000 Colt Dragoon revolvers. Best estimates state that there are a few dozen of these extremely rare Colts still in existence.

These revolvers were issued primarily to the Regiment of Mounted Riflemen commanded by General Persifor Smith who served on the armistice commission that ended hostilities with Mexico and was appointed military governor of Mexico City. Later, as commanding general at Vera Cruz, he oversaw the evacuation of the last United States forces from Mexico. After the war, Smith became the first commander of the Pacific Division, and, subsequently, from 1850 to 1856 commanded the Department of Texas. Many of the pistols saw service in the West prior to and during the American Civil War.

This revolver has the distinctive Second Contract style back strap and grip profile with the Walker square back brass trigger guard. The cylinder has oval stops with a barely visible pressure ridge between them. The serial number “2792” is stamped in small numerals (as they were on the original Walkers) on the barrel lug, frame, trigger guard, back strap and cylinder. The partial serial number “792” is stamped on the underside of the cylinder pin, and the partially visible “279” is stamped on the loading lever. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped: “ADDRESS SAML COLT NEW-YORK CITY” reading from the breech to the muzzle. “COLTS/PATENT/U.S.” is stamped on the left side of the frame just above the end of the trigger guard bow.

Colt’s Dragoons experienced some of the harshest conditions the mid-19th century had to offer, and it is amazing that any survived, in any condition. This pistol was designed for use by horse-mounted rifleman, and it is so much pistol that you will want a horse to carry it for you because of its significant weight. This one would no doubt have seen use during the American Civil War. This is a great opportunity to add one of Samuel Colt’s most recognized inventions to your collection.

The overall condition is good. Patina throughout. The action is strong. The bore is in good condition with strong rifling. There is a small crack in the frame at the trigger screw head that is stable and not mobile. The hammer screw and trigger screw are replacements, as is the barrel wedge. The grip is solid, showing use.
